A beta stage of my next Sonic the Hedgehog themed Desktop Wallpaper. This time it's gimmick Mountain from Sonic 2 on the Master system and Game Gear.
So why a level from a smaller game compared to others? Well, I like Gimmick Mountain. I'm a lover of the colour teal, and Gimmick Mountain has it in droves. It also had some nifty area features I felt would look amazing in a 3D perspective, such as the Hamster-Wheel platforms (Seen at the very front of the picture) and expecially the Rotating Cyclone Cylinders (As seen as the main piece of this image).
I like how the Cylinder has come out, it really pulls your eye into the centre of the image, which is something I'm really proud of. Sonic jumps up the cylinder in the games, so I made a jumpable gap for him to get through, the central pole is also based on the original backdrop. I took the basic black and teal bold lines and turned them into mouldings, so it appeared the core was clamped into place by several layers of mechanical shielding.
The rest of the image will have different parts of detail, in the purple gap the other side of the cylinder I might add the spikes (There's a preview screenshot in the bottom right showing the spikes) and in the foreground I want there to be a drop and have the rocky cavernous walls on either side. The rocks are what's taking the time. I want to make them look just right, and it's taking me alot to get them there. I'm also going to experiment with my brand new shading style on the rocks, an experimental technique for pixel art where you shade with the opposing colour.
For example, the rocks in the actual level bg are purple while the entire rest of Gimmick Mountain is teal. This was to differentiate the two so you could actually see where you were going. My plan is to make the purple rocks and highlight them in teal to give a cyberpunk lighting effect (If it's successful I may name it Cyberpunk Shading) and really bring an otherwise lifeless cliff to life.
I hope you guys like it, I have plans to do more because they're really very enjoyable I might do Sunset Park or Aqua Lake next. Sunset Park would look amazing with Cyberpunk shading (And obviously the famous train scene ) but Aqua Lake will be more interesting, challenging and include more interesting design and colours. We shall see. I need to finish this one first lol!
Gimmick MT: Perhaps one of the most underrated mechanized zone in any Sonic game next to Metallic Madness. I think this is incredible but it might be me...or is the platform right of the gap not look like it's 'bonded' to the cylinder in the center? Maybe it was your intention for the center platform with the jump-gap surrounding the cylinder to 'slide' into the central cylinder and not to be welded/bonded to it? It just kinda stuck out to me....nevertheless, I still find this pretty amazing. The central cylinder has a excellent interesting 3D look to it.
-- YAY! A few hundred thousand more and i'll be a millionaire!
This is really damn awesome. Sonic 2 is my fave Sonic game and it would be a dream of mine to have a 3D remake. I can accept that will never happen though, so seeing stuff like this keeps me going. It's a really awesome interpretation of the cylinder areas of the level, I never imagined them in 3D quite like that. Very awesome stuff, I realise you posted this a while ago, but I shall still say I look forward to the finished product should it be done.
I won't bother linking because that seems a bit self-indulgent, but while they are all just doodles and artwork and stuff, I just recently uploaded a whole load of sketchy artwork of pretty much every level in 3D, and a while back I even drew the entire Sky High Act 1 level in 3D (prolly best to search for that one rather than trawl through my gallery for it). Just thought I'd let you know in case you love Sonic 2's level designs as much as me and also are curious about how they'd look in 3D.
Rambling about my stuff aside, this gets a fave from me, WIP or not.

The bonding issue is caused by the angle, tho I definately see what you mean. I'll have to see what I can do with that. I'm glad I got the perspective right to give it a 3D effect, tis what I was after, especially since the original cylinder was so flat looking (Especially the central pillar) in the original game.
Keep your eye out, I'm currently finishing this off with a brand new lighting technique which is giving the image a bit of a darker cyber-punk look

Sorry for the long wait for a reply. I took a year-long hiatus from pixel art due to personal issues. But now I'm all happy and stable, I'm back and (hopefully) better than ever. And my first job? Finishing off this piece of art
The finished product is using a brand new lighting technique which is working surprisingly well (I've had a year to think about how to apply it XD) and give the picture a darker but more colourful appearance. Sort of cyber-punk if you will. It'll probably take me a week or two depending on my free time, but look forward to it. It's gonna be something special ^_^
